Jan Dibbets

Jan Dibbets index card gives instructions to drive a car and to record the words “1 mile,” “2miles,” “3 miles,” and so on after every driven mile. The map on the wall documents the driven route.

The images of a visitor standing next to Jan Dibbets’ installation and holding a loop in one hand probably document an “unrequested event,“ performed by five artists during the opening of 955,000. In a letter by Dane Wright, one of the participants in this event, to VAG director Tony Emery the artists request $4.40 for materials used in this event, which according to the letter took place as follows:

Event one, act one: five Vancouver artists arrive at van art gallery, sharing one umbrella in a taxi……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..$1.95
Event one, act two: artists enter gallery without invitations and buy drinks……………………………..$2.50
Event one, act three: artists proceed to tape recorder, remove loop and replace with own preparred [sic!] loop – and get hassled by Miss Lippard………………………………………………………(cost of loop .05¢)
