In conjunction with a yearlong series of exhibitions planned to celebrate the Vancouver Art Gallery's 75th anniversary, the Gallery has produced a dynamic web-based publication that documents 75 works from the collection. Here readers will find in-depth information and interpretation on 75 works selected from the four collection-based exhibitions planned for this year. Along with images of the individual artworks, there are artist's biographies, bibliographical excerpts, exhibition histories and a wide range of collection documents—including original correspondence, receipts, conservation records and more.
The publication is intended to provide readers with a rich visual insight into selected works in the Gallery collection. It is easily browsed with a seemingly endless depth of images and information. But this publication is also intended to be a valuable tool for researchers and students seeking in-depth information on these artworks. In addition to the thousands of pages of images and text that comprise the publication, readers will be able to easily download information on specific works for their continued research. In this way it is also a new type of publication for the Gallery, one that can be printed by users on demand.
This publication is presented in two parts. The first part, intended to coincide with the first exhibition in the series—75 Years of Collecting: British Masters, Group of Seven and Pop Icons—documents 30 works from the collection, representing some of the first works acquired for the Gallery and some of the most recent. The remaining 45 works will be published to coincide with the three forthcoming exhibitions, each of which offers a unique insight into the collection and a compelling selection of works for documentation.
