He has particiapted in international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale in 1990, the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh in 1991, and Documenta 9. Thomas Struth lives and works in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Struth's photographs examine the connections and relationships that condition our experience of viewing the world. Analytical in their constructed objectivity and photographic precision, these photographs depict the world in various moments of change, often reflecting the unrecognized physical and psychological aspects of culture, people, cities and nature.
Struth is known for creating photographic portraits of individuals, buildings and streets that capture minute—though edited—details. Struth's street scenes are among his earliest works and reflect the influence of the Bechers whose topographic studies of buildings employed a neutral environment—neither cloudy nor sunny— and a detailed rendering of the buildings.
